GUM DISEASES PERIODONTOLOGY
Healthy gingiva is light pink in color, has an orange peel appearance and tightly surrounds the tooth. Poor gingival health can cause the loss of even healthy teeth without caries.
Inflammatory diseases that affect the gums and other tissues that support the teeth are called periodontal disease. Inflammation or periodontal disease in the supporting tissues of the teeth can cause the loss of caries-free teeth in advanced stages. Periodontal diseases are responsible for 70% of tooth loss in adults. Periodontal treatment is the main treatment in dentistry and the chance of success is high in early intervention.
The first stage of gingivitis is called gingivitis. Gingivitis can be reversed with regular oral care and scaling. If the simple inflammation of the gum progresses, it can cause gum disease called “periodontitis”, which causes the loss of the jawbone.
Gum Treatment Methods
Early treatment of gum diseases is important. Thus, tissue destruction is treated before it reaches advanced dimensions.
-Professional Teeth Cleaning; The tartar and harmful tissues formed on the teeth and gingival edges are removed. If calculus is constantly occurring in the mouth, calculus cleaning should be done regularly (every 6 months).
-Curettage (Straightening of Root Surface); It is applied if tartar and harmful tissues cover the gingival pocket and root surface. Tartars and harmful tissues on the root surface of the tooth are removed with a curette or laser, and the gingiva is ensured to tightly surround the root surface.
-Flap Operation; If the stones and harmful tissues on the root surface cannot be removed sufficiently by curettage, that area is opened surgically. Harmful tissues and, if necessary, part of the gingiva are removed. If the bone loss in the opened area is too much, artificial bone graft or bone tissues taken from the patient can be placed during the procedure.
